Restaurant Performance Shows Modest Improvement
U.S. restaurants posted modest performance gains in January, according to the latest data from the National Restaurant Association, though many operators continue to face ongoing business challenges.
The trade group’s Restaurant Performance Index, which measures overall industry health through a range of indicators, rose 0.6% from December to 99.9 in January. However, readings below 100 signal that the industry remains in contraction rather than expansion.
Despite the slight improvement, customer traffic remains a concern. A majority of restaurant operators — 55% — reported a decline in foot traffic in January compared with the previous month. That marks the 12th consecutive month of reduced traffic, according to the association.
Still, some operators are expressing cautious optimism. The association said business sentiment improved after same-store sales in January showed a slight increase from December levels.
Looking ahead, 32% of operators surveyed expect sales to rise over the next six months, while only 12% anticipate a decline.
