Opus has officially broken ground on a new, specialized 52,174-square-foot facility for family-owned Elgin Recycling in Gilberts, Illinois. This build-to-suit project is a significant addition to the Turnberry Lakes Business Park, strategically placing it near Elgin Recycling's corporate headquarters and one of its four existing Chicago-area scrap yards.
The new Gilberts facility is specifically designed to handle electronic waste (e-waste). It will process electronics collected from public drop-off sites, expertly breaking them down into their component parts before sending them to specialized electronics recyclers. This expansion underscores Elgin Recycling's commitment to responsibly managing a wide range of materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, exotic alloys, and electronics.
As the design-builder, Opus is managing the project with a completion target of January. The facility's design is highly functional, featuring a 28-foot clear height, six dock doors, two drive-in doors, and parking for up to 58 vehicles. Opus is collaborating with Architects Plus Design Studio PLLC (architect of record) and Structural Integrity Inc. (structural engineer of record) to bring this state-of-the-art recycling hub to life.
