The Elgin Development Group monitors Help Wanted Online (HWOL) job postings published by the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Below is a list of the top 10 employers and occupations posted online for Region 4 and Region 8 businesses in March 2026. Region 4 includes the 10 counties in northeastern Illinois consisting of Cook, De Kalb, Du Page, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, Mc Henry, and Will. Region 8 includes 19 counties in the far southern part of Illinois consisting of Alexander, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, Wabash, Wayne, White, and Williamson. There is a stark difference between the two areas in terms of the number of jobs posted and, in some cases, employers.

The State of Illinois is divided into ten HWOL regions with nine regions posting roughly the same numbers as Region 8 shown above. The top 10 employers in nine of the ten regions (94 counties) have a combined HWOL of 6,226 job postings, while our Region 4 (10 counties) has 14,457 HWOL job postings. Statewide the top five employers in all of Illinois in order are University of Chicago Medicine, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, Walmart/Sam’s Cub, Kroger/Albertson’s and Advocate Aurora Health. The top five occupations are Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Truck Drivers, Home Health Care Providers, and Retail Supervisors.. Our metropolitan region is a draw for employees from all over the State of Illinois, region and nation as a result of the number of employers and jobs available in our area.
