Government Shutdown Threatens to Halt Food Stamp Funding

The ongoing government shutdown is expected to suspend funding for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) starting November 1, according to a notice posted Monday on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) website.

Nearly 42 million Americans depend on SNAP benefits to help cover the cost of groceries each month. A disruption in funding could have a major ripple effect on households, grocery retailers, and local economies that rely on those benefits.

The shutdown, which began on October 1, has now become the second-longest government shutdown in U.S. history, raising growing concerns about the economic and social impact of continued federal funding delays.
