     The Illinois Department of Employment Security released monthly employment numbers yesterday for Illinois municipalities, counties, and metropolitan districts for January 2026. January Metro and Local area data was released on Thursday, April 9 due to the additional time required to revise historical monthly, annual sub-State nonfarm jobs and unemployment statistics (benchmarking). Elgin’s economy continues to show resilience despite an increase in unemployment rates. The unemployment rate for Elgin went up from 4.6% in July to 8.6% in January. Despite the increase, Elgin employment numbers are rather stable.

       The table below shows the number of people in Elgin’s labor force, the number of people that are employed and the number of people that are unemployed in the same months of 2025 and 2026. Elgin work force has grown in each of the last five years. The percentage of Elginites that are unemployed in Cook Count went up to 10.6%. The percentage of people in Kane County that are unemployed went up to 8.0%. The number of people unemployed in Cook County Elgin is 1,445, while in Kane County Elgin is 3,735.
