Elgin @ A Glance

     The third edition of the data viewbook, known as ELGIN @ A Glance, has been completed and printed. The Elgin Development Group and Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the City of Elgin, have put together an economic development booklet for existing residents and newcomers with interesting facts about the community all in one place. It is a source of information about the quality of live, workforce, education, arts, diversity, healthcare, municipality, and more. ELGIN @ A Glance may be the only booklet where people can read about all of the things that make Elgin a great community. That is why Elgin was recently ranked the No. 1 best city in the United States for safety and affordability for a reason.

     Some interesting facts include:

• Median Household Incomes and Households with a Computer are above the national median.
• Elgin moved from being the 8th to 6th most populous city in Illinois after gaining over 6,609 people.
• 79.5% of Elgin’s workforce population work outside the city, while 1 in 6 are employed in manufacturing.
• There are 58,000 people in the workforce and people come to work here from over 185 communities.
• We have 501 miles of water main, 6,100 fire hydrants and over 34,500 water meters in the system.
• There are 195 sworn Police Officers and 133 sworn Firefighters.
• Sherman Hospital has more beds (255) than the Holiday Inn Suites (243).
• 95 languages are spoken in School District U-46 homes. U-46 has 35,377 students.
• Elgin manufacturers make everything from cosmetics to bearings and spices to coral reef.
